# Upgrade the software on a standalone Mac

You can upgrade the software and migrate the existing configuration settings.

Before upgrading the software, make sure that your system meets all requirements.

1. Install the software using the wizard.

2. Make sure that all existing preferences are migrated to the new version.

> 
> By default, Threat Prevention and Adaptive Threat Protection are installed in async mode. When you upgrade Threat Prevention on a standalone system, the system running in kext mode is switched to sync mode and system running in kextless mode is switched to async mode.
